Cover Three: NC State Outpaces Georgia Tech — But What Does It Mean?

Balanced Attack

For once, credit where it’s due — the offense carried the weight. The tempo, creativity, and willingness to finish drives were miles ahead of the predictable starts fans have seen too often this season.

All week, the noise was about Georgia Tech quarterback Haynes King and his rising Heisman buzz. But by the end of the night, it was Bailey who walked away the winner. The sophomore was sharp — 340 yards, two touchdowns, a 75% completion rate — and even added a rushing score. It was the kind of performance that makes you think maybe there’s something brewing here.

When the Wolfpack found out just hours before kickoff that Smothers was out, they turned to redshirt freshman Duke Scott. Scott responded with 24 carries for 194 yards — not a typo. Doeren shrugged after the game and said, “That was the 16th-ranked rushing defense in the ACC. We thought we could run the football on them.” Turns out, he was right.

Still, if this team has to hang 30-plus points every week just to survive, that margin for error creates real pressure on the offense. Looking at the schedule, the Pack have only one explosive offensive team remaining — when they travel to Miami on November 15

RedZone Defense

Georgia Tech crossed into NC State territory four times in the third quarter alone. Two field goals, a touchdown, and one miss — and yet somehow, the Wolfpack bent but didn’t completely break. NC State answered with two touchdowns and a field goal of their own, and that stretch ended up being the difference.

Haynes King didn’t go quietly. He threw for 408 yards and two touchdowns, ran for 103 yards and two more, and kept Georgia Tech alive until his final heave was intercepted by linebacker Caden Fordham. The stat sheet is ugly — and it tells the story.

And here’s where the optimism runs into a wall — or maybe just thin air. What used to be this program’s identity has quietly become its biggest liability. Can the Pack defense slow down Miami enough to let C.J. Bailey and the offense put up enough points to walk away with a win in Coral Gables?

The Dave Doeren Dilemma

This might be the most “NC State” team Dave Doeren has ever had — flawed, feisty, and frustrating all at once.

He’s brought stability and culture, no doubt. But after more than a decade, you start to wonder if this is the ceiling. Beating Georgia Tech doesn’t quiet the noise; it just delays the inevitable question: Is Dave Doeren still the guy to rebuild what he once built?

Because right now, NC State isn’t bad — but they haven’t played at the level this fan base expects. That’s starting to feel like the scariest place of all.

The team is clearly playing hard for their coach. The question now becomes: will a four-game win streak to close the season delay what looked like an inevitable divorce just one week ago?
